Morning stand-ups. The daily ritual of pretending everything’s fine.

Most morning stand-ups feel like this:
“Any blockers?”
…Other then the the next meeting ofcourse 😉
“Nope, all good.”
And we move on.
But stand-ups aren’t just about tasks and tickets.
They’re about team tempo.
Too tense, and someone’s day derails before 10 am.
Too chill, and we drift into the land of “what were we even supposed to do today?”

A few months ago, we tried something new.
Before we start, we run a simple anonymous survey.
Just one key question:
“How are you feeling right now?”
No names. No pressure. No fake smiles.
Just a quiet moment of self-check.

And something interesting happened
People became aware of their starting line for the day.
If you’re feeling great? Now you know to spread that energy.
Feeling off? You don’t need to explain—but you’ve acknowledged it, and that’s half the battle.

Especially in a remote team, where you can’t see who walked in with a “don’t-talk-to-me” face, this question helps to bridge the gap.

We’re not trying to turn stand-ups into group therapy.
But knowing where your team is helps you get where you want to go.
Small shift.
I found it helpful.
Adopt if you like.
Or keep asking “Any blockers?” and wonder why no one’s talking.
